Misfiring City grateful for a point.

Might as well get it out the way, City were not at the races last night, not by a million miles. Some chap behind me was saying Exeter looked a good team. No they didn’t. They were ahead courtesy of a well taken free kick that was generous to say the least. I didn’t see a foul at all. After that the Imps laboured in vain, it was very laboured. I didn’t see much from Exeter though. They packed the midfield and that’s when City usually struggle. They knew that, we know that.

With very little enterprise on the pitch, Jason Shackell and John Akinde aside, it looked like City were about to slip to a very rare defeat. I’m not sure in the circumstances that may have been a good thing. For me City have been nursing a boil that threatened to burst for some time. Who knows, a defeat may have released the handcuffs and turned those draws in to wins?

As it happens, John Akinde, for it was he, found a way through the melee and secured a point for the Imps. Cue delirium in the stands and everyone went home happy-ish. Exeter had brought it all on themselves with their delaying tactics that irritated the referee to the extent that he just kept on playing. Exeter made a substitution pretty much as the game was about to end. They must regret that now because in those additional thirty seconds Akinde struck.

It was said on BBC Radio Lincolnshire it was mis hit. It wasn’t. I was right behind it and the ball went in the only path it could if it was to reach the net. Mayhem. Hugs all round, mines a pint thank you very much.

I’m not the first to comment that the game changed when Matt Rhead came on. I’m a Rhead fan but he’s not the answer long term. However in the war of attrition that was the game last night he certainly was. A couple of things occur. Is it worth trying the two, with Akinde, up front? Secondly, why are we playing Akinde on his own, at home? What do I know? Well I know Akinde had a partner at Barnet and look what happened there.

Through it all we have to wonder how it’s all going to end up. As my good friend Stewart said, the others are running out of games. City are stuttering but still gaining points. Bury may look at last night and be reinvigorated. What’s the answer? A few days in Majorca, Skegness? Who knows? Not me, however its FGR next, usually a happy hunting ground. Will the bubble burst? Will the chains be cast off?

Don’t take your eyes off it for a moment.
